Obituary

Dr. Lynn Rogers, age 63, died Sunday, February 13, 2011 at her home.

A celebration of her life will be Tuesday, February 15, at 4p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Peele and Rev. Fred Parker officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church social hall.

Survivors are husband, Alva Riska Rogers; daughter, Leigh Parker (Fred); son, Rick Rogers, Jr. (Lori); sisters, Barbara Boatright (Paul) of Waycross, GA, Genevieve King of Widner, GA; brother, Butch Guest (Victoria) of Charleston, SC; sisters-in-law, Sammie Hendrix (Robert) of Catula, GA, Faye Rogers of Port Wentworth, GA; aunt, Doris Smith of Savannah; uncle, Danny Crumpton of Warrenton, GA; grandchildren, Marlyn, Lauren, Erin, and Morgan Parker, Laralin, Alva Riska III (Rock), and Cole Rogers.

Dr. Rogers achieved her Doctorate in Curriculum Studies from Georgia Southern University, her Specialist Degree in School Administration and Leadership from University of Georgia, her Specialist Degree in Instructional Media and Technology from Georgia Southern University, her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from University of Georgia, and her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Georgia Southwestern University. She was Dodge County School Superintendent from July 2007 to February 2009 and Director of Heart of Georgia RESA Educational Technology Center from 2004 to 2006. Dr. Rogers was also Director of the Mercer University Center until 1996 as well as School Technology Coordinator for 9 years. Among many other accomplishments, Dr. Rogers was the Curriculum Director for the Dodge County School System and Instructor for Mercer University for 8 years. She was the media specialist at elementary and high school levels for 19 years as well as a classroom teacher in grades ranging from kindergarten through high school from 1969 to 1978. Dr. Rogers also taught college level courses such as Educational Media, Children's Literature, and Educational Technology.
Dr. Rogers authored several publications including School Matters, a monthly newspaper column for the Dodge County News , and Curriculum Connections, a monthly newsletter for math educators. She authored grants for the Dodge County School System totaling $4,000,000. Dr. Rogers was recognized for her achievements with honors such as Rotarian of the Year in 2007, Teacher of the Year in 1971 and 1999, Eastman's Woman's Club Woman of the Year in 1983, and Media Specialist of the Year in 1986.
Dr. Rogers served her community by actively participating on the Ocmulgee Regional Library Board of Directors, Public Health Board of Directors, Heart of GA RESA Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and a Member of the Eastman Rotary Club.
She was a member of many professional organizations including Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, Honor Society of PHI KAPPA PHI, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, National Association of University Women, and Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Active pallbearers are Ken Rogers, Donald Stevens, Kenny Thomas, Travis Martin, K.P. Boatright, and Keith Boatright. Honorary pallbearers are Jolene Nobles, Pam Wiles, Jan Smith, Sue Lord, Diane Giddens, Debbie Mercer, Sandra Isom, and Wynonna Roberts.
