With hearts full of both gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Bledsoe Henderson.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Rick Hamilton officiating. In her 100 years of life, Gwen was defined by devotion to others. She spent a lifetime caring for family, serving through her church, and quietly helping those who needed someone steady and dependable by their side. Often, that care meant balancing another person’s checkbook each month just as meticulously as she balanced her own, with every account reconciled and every penny counted. Thoughtful and methodical in all things, she carried the lessons of the Great Depression throughout her life: waste nothing, save everything, and make do with what you have. In a world that often felt fleeting, Gwen offered stability, grace, and permanence. She left an indelible impression on everyone she met with her extraordinary beauty, quiet strength, and sharp wit. She was an observant student of both people and life itself. Her trust was earned, but she was never cynical. She noticed everything, remembered everything, and possessed both a keen intellect and an abundance of hard-earned common sense. Gwen was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born on February 3, 1926, in Eastman, Georgia, to Joseph Emmett and Maggie Louise Bryan Bledsoe. She graduated from Eastman High School in 1943, Andrew College in 1945, and the University of Georgia in 1951 with a degree in education. In 1952, she married John Carson Henderson, and together they built a life in Atlanta, sharing 64 years of marriage until his passing in 2016. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carren Sellers and Gladstone Sellers; her granddaughter, Courtney Sellers; her grandson and his wife, Trey Sellers and Meredith Sellers; and her treasured great-grandson, Carson, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly. Having celebrated her 100th birthday, Gwen was preceded in death by many cherished family members, including her parents; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita Bledsoe Jarrard and Rudyard Kipling Jarrard Sr., and Anne Bledsoe Pinnell and William Oliver Pinnell; as well as her niece, Paula Pinnell Wright, and nephew, Rudyard Kipling Jarrard Jr. A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2026 at North Decatur United Methodist Church, 1523 Church Street, Decatur, Ga 30030.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Alzheimer’s Association.
