Obituary

Mrs. Bertie Mae Garrett, age 94, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Ogeechee Area Hospice. Mrs. Garrett was an educator for 43 years, a Peace Corps volunteer, missionary in over 40 countries, speaker, author, and philanthropist. Her goal in life was to be of service to others.
She received many awards for outstanding service, was recognized at the state level for her volunteerism, and most recently received the Board of Regents, University of Georgia, 2009 Alumni Award for Excellence in Education.
Until her death, she was active in the Dodge County Hospital Auxiliary, the Pilot Club and in Delta Kappa Gamma and served on advisory boards for other local organizations.
Surviving are five nieces and nephews: Cyril (Elspye) Johnson and Jeryl (Judy) Johnson, both of Windsor, S.C., Belva J. Keisler of Williston, S.C.; H. Franklin (Ann) Pierce of Darien; and Carolyn P. Mandes of Statesboro, as well as several great-nephews and nieces and their children.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2011 at Zebulon Baptist Church, and the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., with interment following at Orphans Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Habitat, Boys and Girls Club, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, or Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro, GA.
